Garo Honoo no Kokuin ep 17

Garo Honoo no Kokuin

Well we all saw this coming. It was telegraphed a mile away and if you didn’t see it coming you might want to get your eyes checked. I am actually writing this before the next episode is out! Oh, and Leon’s new life is destroyed and everything is sad and terrible again. Let’s look at the episode.
As mentioned before, the main plot of this episode is Leon being emotionally destroyed for a second time this series. Alfonso comes to the sleepy little village that Leon has been living in because he has heard rumor of Horror. Of course, that Horror attacks the home of the family Leon has been living with. He tries to get them to safety, but they run back to their house to save their crops, and all die. The girl that Leon has been growing sweet on specifically dies in his arms. This is a really interesting character growth for Leon. Before his world is wrecked for a second time, we see him talking to Alfonso about finally figuring out what it means to be a Makai Knight, to be a person who protects instead of avenges. And it makes sense, Leon had no one to protect when he was growing up, all he had was his father and he was another Makai Knight who needed no protection. The lesson of protecting the weak seemed to have just gone over his head. He knew it as a rule, not as a way of life, which a Makai Knight needs to. Now he has learned that lesson, but also now has no connection to the people who taught him this lesson. I hope this will be the first real step to him becoming a Knight again. I’m not sure if I want Leon to become Garo again, but I feel like if he does they can still do it right and make it a compelling story. Also, Zaruba was in this episode and had a speaking role. Best episode of the season, hands down.
After the past few one off episodes, I feel like this is the first step the show has taken to the next big storyline. We will finally see Leon’s growth of a character come to fruition, which I can’t wait to see. So until next week, keep on watching.
