Garo: Honoo no Kokuin Episode 3

Garo Honoo no Kokuin

Me with this blog
I might be realizing that doing a weekly post in a timely manner might be a bit tough. But I am not going to stop! I shall go on undaunted and make a post for every episode! Even if that means that the post themselves will be almost a week late. But enough of me complaining about my problems, let’s talk about the most important part of any Garo series, Zaruba.

Zaruba. He is awesome.
For those who don’t know, Zaruba is the talking ring companion to every person who has had the Garo armor so far. He is the one character that is in every series, regardless of time period. I was curious about why he wasn’t in the anime yet, but I just assumed they were making the anime take place so far back that the character was just not made yet. But they made sure that the most important character was in the show, and gave him a surprisingly good episode as his introduction.

Anime Zaruba! He looks cool.
This episode served two different major purposes. The first was to introduce Zaruba, but the second was to show the state of the world for Makai Knights and Priests. We have seen from one side that humans are being tricked into attacking the Knights and Priests, but now we are getting to see how the Horrors are effecting the good guys. In the franchise so far, it has been made clear that Knights and Priests, but especially Knights, are more resistant to falling to the darkness that are Horrors. We have seen it happen, but it is still incredibly rare. So when we see a Makai Knight fall to darkness by a Horror manipulating him to desire Zaruba, it really speaks to the world these characters are in. The Horrors are gaining power, so much so that they can start directly attacking the Makai Knights in such a way that they can take them over. This is a really good way of showing for long time fans of the series just how serious this setting is. And for new fans this is a good way of just showing how strong the monsters are.

Non-anime Zaruba! He also looks cool.
As an aside, I want to talk about how much I love Zaruba. It makes me so happy to see him back in the show. Zaruba is this great companion character who doesn’t get a ton of screen time despite always being on the main characters hand. But that just makes every line he has that much more golden. He is just so sarcastic, it is wonderful. I hope he becomes a very big character in the anime, especially because it is cheaper to animate him talking in the anime then to CG a talking ring into every episode of the live action series. So, until next time, have fun watching.

Real life Zaruba! He is also cool. I want a Zaruba.
