12 Days of Anime Christmas - Day Five

Day Five- Studio Trigger

I’ve never really been a big follower of any particular animation studio. While I could recognize Studio Bonez or J.C. Staff or in the very least knew the names, I never considered myself a fan of any particular one or another, or a follower of any particular studio. But in the past year that has changed. I might actually consider myself an actual fan of Studio Trigger.

In the past year Studio Trigger has made two big shows. By big though I mean actually 1 to 2 cour shows, and I am not counting their short Little Witch Academy. The first show was Kill la Kill, the surprisingly amazing show about fashion and fascism. Kill la Kill’s story, characters, and even art design and animation was all on point. The story was a lot of fun with a great way of increasing the stakes up till the final battle. The characters were amazing, all having fun and interesting personalities and all had great designs. The designs of everything in fact were amazing. It was very stylized and the art design makes it very recognizable. But the animation was what made the show special. Well, the characters were what made the show special, but the animation was incredible. It had this mix of low quality animation, the best example being a scene where a girl changed her cloths like a paper doll, to very high quality animation that just looked plain beautiful. Their second show, Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de, is much more like any other given show. It is a super-powered, slice of life anime, like any one of a million, a show that a company makes to make some quick cash. But the thing that makes it different is its animation. Well, to be fair the show as a whole is pretty good and a decent deconstruction of a stupid genre. But the animation is of a similar style to that of Kill la Kill. It trades before a very simple style, a more American style with animation lines in order to give the illusion of movement, but also highly detailed scenes that just bring out the emotion of the scene. This contrast between animation styles in a single show is something that I have really came to love, and it is the reason that I think I have become a fan of Studio Trigger.

Studio Trigger has quickly became my favorite animation studios. The shows they have done have been really good so far, and it gives me hope for their future. I look forward to their next show. And you look forward to tomorrows 12 days. So until tomorrow, keep on watching.
