Day Four- Orenchi no Furo Jijou
As you may know, I watch a lot of
micro series. A micro series, for those who don’t know, are any show that is unrealistically
short, around 5-10 minutes, but usually less than 5. There have been a few this
year, Tonari no Seki-kun makes the cut in my mind, Strange + and its sequel,
the lesbian animal girl show Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, but the show I want
to talk about today is the homoerotic merman anime, Orenchi no Furo Jijou.
Jijou is a micro series about an
average guy who lives with a merman. The merman in question lives in the guy’s
bath tub and every so often invites his friends over, who include an octopus
guy, a jellyfish guy, and a small snail guy. So he basically has a harem of
aquatic, shirtless men. The show is kind of funny, most of the jokes either
involving bath humor or fish humor. But at the end of the day it is just a show
about pretty boys who are bathing together. Fujioshi bait at best. So why am I talking
about this show? Because it has one of the craziest opening themes this year
has had. I can’t call it a good opening, but by jove is it insane. The opening is
a mash of Shaft Studio style animation and clichés, black and white visuals,
and presents the show as a psychological drama. Everyone looks sad and angry,
like they were just betrayed or someone died. And the main character is
drowning, but diving after him is his merman boyfriend. The opening creates
this amazing feeling of dissidence between what the show is about and what the
op lets you think the show is about. It is really great, and it is one my 12
moments of 2014.
(The OP in question)
So the
craziest OP of the year belongs to a fujioshi bate micro series. Who could have
guessed it? I still have a few more days left of this crazy thing, so look
forward to tomorrow. So until then, keep on watching.
